Robert Browning's 'An Epistle ... of Karshish' has been said to implicitly refer to St. Paul because of its epistolary style. This epistolary style was common in Egypt during the time of Karshish, the early Christian period. Because Egyptian papyri specimens were items of interest from the late 18th century onward, it is more accurate to assume that Browning knew about this epistolary style and adopted it in his poem with no reference at all to St. Paul, who was himself probably following conventions of the times when he wrote his epistles.
