Robert Browning's 'Johannes Agricola in Meditation' is a critique of Christianity and its emphasis on prayer and idol worship. Johannes Agricola surmises that such Christian practices of 'bargaining' with God are futile because bargains take place only among equals. Agricola's apparent rationality is symbolic of Protestantism's efforts to discredit what the church stands for. His attempt to bargain with God is likewise futile because his perspectives have been clouded by logic. However, he succeeds in bargaining with the devil with all his misanthropic self-promotion.
