Robert Browning's 'Porphyria's Lover' refers not only to the related sources of a woman's murder by her lover in John Wilson's 'Extracts from Gosschen's Diary' and Bryan Procter's 'Marcian Colonna,' but on Shakespeare's 'Othello' as well. While Browning clearly retains elements of the former texts, he uses strangulation, as Iago suggested to Othello. As 'Othello' implies, the murder of the woman is the romantic male's expression of his desire to preserve and possess the beloved.
