Michael Stern is an American who was principal conductor of this orchestra from 1996 through 2000. These recordings were made in his final season, as was his Saarbrücken recording of the Second Symphony, coupled with Ives's Universe Symphony on an earlier Col Legno disc (Fanfare 29:1). Stern's view of the Second Symphony was lighter than that of most conductors, but he turns the tables here with a weighty, dark performance of the usually ethereal ...
