Robert Browning's poem 'The Italian in England' shows his concern with and interest in the first organized expressions of the struggle for Italian independence. The poem was admired by the Italian patriot, Giuseppe Mazzini. In this paper I intend to outline Browning's gradual interest in the cause of Italian unity, discuss his relationship with the Italian patriot, and address the question of Mazzini's lost translation of 'The Italian in England'. In doing so, I hope to provide new information and show how the links which existed between the two men went beyond a formal acquaintance.
