A Little Soldier 
by Lucy Maud Montgomery 
 
   My blue eyed lad and bonny, 
   Low bending o'er your book 
   With face so flushed and eager 
   And such an earnest look. 
   Reading those splendid stories 
   Of the brave days of old, 
   Of heroes grand and noble, 
   Of knights and soldiers bold, 
   I read your secret wishes 
   As to yourself you say, 
   I mean to be a soldier 
   And do such deeds some day. 
 
   You need not wait the future 
   My lad with eyes so blue, 
   For life's a field of battle 
   The strife is waiting you 
   The armies of temptation
