In 1876, Lucy Maud Montgomery, age 1 1/2 years, came to live with her grandparents at the Macneill homestead in Cavendish. This house was to be her home for the next 35 years until 1911, when her grandmother died, and Maud married Rev. Ewan Macdonald and moved to Leaskdale, Ontario.

After 1911, the house was abandoned and fell into disrepair. In 1913, Maud visited the homestead site in the dim twilight of a summer evening, and she wrote in her journal: h7 the lading gray light l couht see ...
