In an unprecedented demonstration of affection for its most famous citizen, considered the world's greatest Black writer, Russia pulled out all stops to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin,

His great-grandfather was Ibrihim Hannibal of Ethiopia.

At Carnegie Hall in New York City, tickets were sold out days in advance of the concert held in honor of Russia's "Black Shakespeare." That was followed two days later by a concert and reception at the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
