On January 29, 1837, Alexander Pushkin, one of the fathers of modern Russian literature, died after being shot in a duel. For the last several months of his life, Pushkin lived in the apartment that is now the Alexander Pushkin's Apartment Museum (Moika River Embankment 12; metro: Nevsky Prospekt). An enormous Pushkin statue stands in front of the Russian Museum on Nevsky Prospekt.
