Russia's Literary Genius Alexander Pushkin: The Great-Grandson of an
African Slave

ALEXANDER SERGEYEVICH PUSHKIN (1799-1837), founding father and gold
standard of Russian literature, is the most Russian of Russian writers. But
he is also the descendant of an African slave. Pushkin's great-grandfather,
Avram Petrovitch Gannibal, was probably born in what is now Cameroon, just
south of Lake Chad. (Some have located his birthplace in northern Africa,
