The work of three Russians, spread over nearly to two centuries, brought a contemporary variation on a familiar language--the romantic and classical tradition of Russian dance--to Ballet West. Andre Prokovsky's Queen of Spades (based on the Tchaikovsky opera, which was in turn inspired by a story of Alexander Pushkin) succeeded admirably as fiery, intriguing dance in its world premiere.
