THE STORY

ACT I. During the reign of Catherine the Great, Surin and Tchekalinsky walk in a park, the former complaining of his bad luck at gambling. They remark that a fellow officer, Gherman, seems obsessed with the gaming table yet never bets. Gherman appears with Tomsky, who wonders what is bothering his friend.
