MOSCOW -- President Boris Yeltsin, marking the 200th birthday of Russia's most revered poet, Saturday awarded the first Alexander Pushkin medals for achievements in culture and science.

"It's a medal of his essence, for the soul, for the heart," Yeltsin said at the Kremlin ceremony, grinning broadly.
