I read with great interest Gary Lee's informative article "Visible Man: Black Among the Reds" {Outlook, April 21} and was pleased to find there passing reference to my book, "Russia and the Negro: Blacks in Russian History and Thought." I was, however, highly perplexed by his statement that I failed to address the question of racism. Very early in the part on Imperial Russia, I mention racist attitudes toward Abram Hannibal, the African great-grandfather of the revered Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.
