MOSCOW - Nearly four months after a Communist lawmaker caused an uproar with outspoken antisemitic remarks, Russian prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation against him.
Retired general Albert Makashov is being investigated for allegedly "inciting inter-ethnic strife," when he blamed Russia's current problems on Jews, calling them "zhidy," or "yids" at rallies last fall.
But Makashov defended himself yesterday, saying the term was used by some of Russia's greatest writers.
