With reference to E.M. Forester's book, A Passage to India; does anyone know what really happened to Adela and Dr, Azis in the Marabar caves? Also, how would you compare this book to Salmon Rushdie's Midnight's Children?

Hi pensive.

sorry mix up. I remember a pillow fight which then became some wrestling match over one of the guys in litnet, all in the name of fun and all my fault. :-) I cant remember exactly who though...Themis and someone I think, I assumed it was you.

Why can't I find anything in the library? Why are there so many different sections? How was I suppossed to know my library has a "High School Reading" section?

Nightshade

welll lets see do you know what band of library you have?

wait this is an american library isnt it...well the theory is the more you break it down the easier it is to find things (rubbish if you ask me but Ive yet to get high enough to change things).

Now gerally speaking your going to have a classics/ general fiction/ crime/ children/ young adult and maybe a hstorical fiction not to mention romance and westerns area. oh and scifi/fantasy

The idea liek I said id to make things easier personally I always say as the library assistangt its what we are there for. well one of the reasons, you might try looking on the tinternet to see if your library has 'gone digital'.
Otherwise your not really expected to know these things you learn as you go on course its agony when they start to change things but take an hour or so every year to just wonder round see what manic new sections have popped up... I used to do it every few months but then our library isnt very big:D

of course you might just have a nasty library we have one of those near us and its not really nasty I guess except they have those horrible rotating shelves where they just pile anything and everything on and it makes no sense at all.

A highschool reading section? really?

Not really so rare as you might expect depend son the proximity of the closest highschool and the state of their library or a case of combined fundings from multiple schools in the area for one good book centre.

I don't know why they don't lump everything in one big alphabetical category.

Ok so I did go back and look at the database and it does list my book in the high school section. but still it's counterintuitive especially since every other book by that author is in the general fiction section.

What's astounding to me is that in this day and age bookstores would still have a separate section for African-American literature. Trips me up every time....

I wonder how people know, I mean for a lesser known author with out a picture in the back? Does the publisher tell you?

Basil
04-16-2007, 06:09 PM
I could understand nonfiction falling into the category of "black studies": writers like W.E.B. Dubois, Albert Murray, etc. But why in the world should the work of Toni Morrison be literally segregated away from general fiction?

Nightshade
04-16-2007, 06:14 PM
because apparantly it deals with 'black' issues, its somthing I cant get my head around personally but I dont understand alot of things and if its what people like *shurg* who am I to argue....although if anyone ever came into a library where I worked and asked me where the 'black' section was Id get very very annoyed. But then again luckely for me public libraries cant divide into those kinds of sections by law anyway.

And paya its about the themes rather than the author.

Why can't I find anything in the library? Why are there so many different sections? How was I suppossed to know my library has a "High School Reading" section?Your library must have a website? If you can reserve books through their website, your books will be waiting for you, nicely packed, anytime you go to the library! There is a small fee for that service here (50p) but it saves lots of hassle and at least the money goes to the library!

And paya its about the themes rather than the author. You mean regardless of the author's racial background?

Nightshade
04-16-2007, 06:36 PM
well there are those who would argue that no 'white' person could ever write a 'black' book but in theory yes regardless of racial backgroud/ sexual orientation if we are talking about GLB literature for example is it maurice? by forester ...oh wait google that hummm well I cant think of one oh I know the works of Wilde wouldnt fall under that category because they dont fit as it were.

You are saying you can find non-black authors in African-American section? Because the books are grouped according to their subject matter rather than the origin of the author?

Correct, in theory but in practise its rare becasue of the objections to the possibility of someone who is non black being able to relate to the situation accuratly and realistically. In the end whatever the policy it tends to go back to the orignal catalogers interpritation of the field.

I find MMO's annoying. My brother plays one, and has just switched to another, I don't see how one can justify spending twelve hours playing a fruitless video game. Reading a book, yes, since it has a clear defined goal, but those damned things just suck up time and have no point to them at all.

Perhaps we can collaborate something of an opposite theme and call it "The Bridges over Deleware Valley" and discuss everything from stressful commutes to jumpers. Seriously though, a movie which is opposite corrolary to another has a certain appeal...yes? Now, if I can just get a job with the National Geographic. quasimodo1

Hi Quasi, it is "Bridges of Madison County" and my friend, Lynne, told me she laughed through the whole film. Well I really liked the film. I did not see her sick sense of humor; I guess I like sad stories and the two actors as well. I suppose you read my post about the film and trying to recognise the bridges in the Delaware Valley. I really did have to go back and try to identify them. I get obsessed with these trivial things. "Fallen" - that was the name of the film. I had not heard it was being filmed in PA; but then again, I think I did hear about a filming a couple years back. That must have been the one.

Not quite sure what you mean by this statement "Seriously though, a movie which is opposite corrolary to another has a certain appeal...yes?" - are you referring to the new Bridge film we will collaborate on?.....pretty funny that one would be but we have enough bridges over the Delaware that it should be a feature film:lol: ! Now will it be a National Geographic special for HBO? You have some wild ideas! Will they do the funding? Janine

quasimodo1
05-22-2007, 09:38 PM
There are so many stories just in my small experience relative to these many bridges. A friend of mine, now deceased, almost ran over a bridge authority policeman coming back from the shore. I'll let you speculate as to the circumstances of that one. I almost went over the Burlington-Bristol towing a truck that was too big. Lost brakes in a driver-ed car coming down the PA side of the Walt Whitman. It goes on a little. As for funding, I think we'll have to call Spielberg or United Artists. quasimodo1

quasi, do you mind me calling you that, now that we may be film partners? It is easier than the full quasimodo 1. Many called Hitchcock "Hitch" :D Your stories are cracking me up. I can see this would be a very entertaining film indeed. Now here is one that my friend, Lynne, could rightfully laugh her fool head off about. So you think that Speilburg or United Artists might fund the project? I got to thinking - it could be "a typical day in the life of a toll booth collector" that could be the tagline - I am sure these guys have plenty of stories on the line of the ones you described. Not a good idea to plow down a cop; glad he missed. Will it be part of the plot? maybe the highlight of the film?
:thumbs_up :thumbs_up as Siskel and Roper say.

To Janine: If Kevin Smith can finance "Clerks" by maxing out five credit cards, then I bet I can get Spielberg and United Artists to fund this one.

quasi - I assume you don't mind me calling you that. Did you see "Clerks"? It was not exactly my type movie. My son thinks it is hilarious. Maybe it is a generation thing...hmmm. Well, wasn't "Clerks" low budget, for heaven sakes? Most of the plot (non-plot) took place either inside or outside the run down convenience store. Our film might run into a lot of expense with special effects - action on the bridges, stunt drivers running over cops (or nearly), student drivers losing their breaks on the Tacony, not to mention wide-body trucks knocking the side rails off the bridge. Also, consider all those arial shots - lots of helicopter work. Could add up!

quasimodo1
05-22-2007, 10:55 PM
Dear Janine: Just being a wise guy about the "Clerks" thing, you know this screenplay thing is something like a flu with me, or maybe it's when I'm really well, anyway since the movie "Swimming with Sharks", the possibilities seem a bit remote. Your right about the budget though, right now I think we could do it in "super8", dubb in the sound later. You think maybe there might be a plot somewhere? Anyway, got to go out to the store for my son. Hope to post later but then some of us work for a living. Oh, I thought of a title..."Easy Pass". quasi

Janine
05-23-2007, 01:30 AM
quasi, "Easy Pass" sounds reasonable to me - good title....could be taken a few different ways - yes, ideal title, but what happened to "The Bridges of Delaware County"?...that could be a real good spoof on the other film "TBOMC". Was there a plot in that film. I don't think nowdays you even need a plot, do you?
By the way, I missed "Swimming with Sharks" - was it good? I have seen it in my library from time to time, but did not take it out yet.

Hey, can't anyone identify the last picture posted? I guess LTFR really has us stumped this time.

It is not "MacBeth", right?

Dear Janine: You are right, the Bridges of Deleware Valley, or County is best title. Did you get a message telling us to move to general chat? No problem. Anyway, I'm getting this image of Clint and Merill staning in from of the first I-beam of the Benjamin Franklin posing for a kodachrome. As for "Swimming with Sharks", the movie, it's a devestating indictment of the screanplay to movie process, a little rough to watch. Be that as it may, a plot may thicken but first to take care of some mundane business. For now, better to keep the day job. Sincerely, quasi

Janine
05-23-2007, 03:04 PM
quasi, I don't know. What exactly is "Swimming with Sharks" about? I did not know if I wanted to invest the time in viewing it. Is it a comedy or a satire?
Yes, I see we got moved - not too surprising. Oh well, better to discuss the film project in here, not in movie scene thread. Yes, Merill and Clint....hmmmm, but then again they are a bit aged now and we need 'fresh blood' in this film, but the aging factor could add humor to the production, at least for that shot. Maybe their kids could star. What day job? - J

There are a couple of sticky threads missing.

#1) The Member Interviews thread. I'd posted a question and was patiently awaiting an answer... now it's gone!

#2) The Forum Questions (or something like that) thread. That was where I'd intended to post this question... Now it's gone, too.

Are they coming back? Do I have my settings all wonky so that they're there but I just can't see them? Am I a pain in the Admin/Mod's backsides? (That last question was rhetorical!!)

thing about being mad is that if you realised you were mad then you'd not be mad. for example, if you didn't believe that the hallucinations were seeing was real then you'd not be 'crazy.' Still, I think you'd have a kind of inkling that things are not quite right.

Hi Toni. :D It seems as if I missed your birthday - I was just now trying to find your thread but was unable to do so. So I'll wish you a late one here, if I may. :) How was it? Did you receive something special? I never ended up mailing that soccer ball across the world . . . .

toni
07-08-2007, 07:59 AM
Why, Thank you very much, David:blush: I had a great time during my birthday, it was just a simple but special one with my family and all my favorite food.. hihi.. I received some stuff for my birthday but what was memorable to me was the birthday card I got from my baby brother! And of course, the poems and the heartwarming messages from our Litnet friends!! :nods: The soccer ball? Dont worry about it;)

ShoutGrace

I think that simple gifts can rightly be considered the best gifts. :) The most memorable days are easy ones spent with family and friends, and I don't see any reason to be extravagant or materialistic on birthdays.

I'm glad you enjoyed yours. How old is your baby brother? For one of my birthdays my niece gave me a card - all she could do was hand paint it (she didn't know how to write anything or paint at the time). Having her shyly hand it to me is one of my best birthday memories.

toni
07-08-2007, 08:19 AM
I couldn't agree with you more about the gifts:nod:
Oh wow, your niece is very sweet! My brother is 11 years old..In his card, he thanked me for having the patience to teach him his lessons ( I'm his tutor ;)) and that he is very thankful for having me as a sister and that he loves me very much! And he drew all sorts of images on the card that represented my interests.. ie. a soccerball, theater masks, Shakespeare.. :D It was tearing after..

hello all and happy bastille day for the french guys.

"Final destination of technology is homelessness" quoted in iTV by david rose (this originally belongs to heidegger). This book takes place in/on a tV screen; the reader flips through the channels with the main character

"History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake" -
"Love, says Bloom, - I mean the opposite of hatred"

bah well in the middle of series 2 I think the 7 year old could tell you the exact episode number but whatever..Rose and the Doctor meet queen Victoria save her from a warewoolf alien theing and proceed to generally freak her out.
Queen Vic in her wisodom says the doctor is amoral and trouble follows him everywhere and she bans him from her kingdom forever.

The estate this all happens at is called Torchwood at the very end she sets up a special guard to protect the kingdom from things like the doctor and other aliens. Torchwood is coincidently an acronym of Doctor who. who they belie is there greatest enemy..and from that time they hunt him ( though he doesnt know it) after battle of Canary warff the old torchwood is destroyed and Captain Jack takes over Torchwood in cardiff which is built over the rift in space and time that was caused by the slytheen, the darleks and the cybermen.

Im not that bad really its just my sister watches them all the time I think we are currently on our 4th or 5th rerun of the whole thing.

yes we were but I still think the thread goblins might try and eat us iif e continue to take over threads....
Anyway as I was going to say you dont need a heart to assisntate someone it merely requires logic, or greed... a mind if you will and ears to be whispered into and I must say 16 ears gives alot of chance to perduade it to chop you up int turnip fertalizer!:p

What would I do with 16 ears, pray tell( oh dear it seems the costume dramas are taking ove my mind... ) however as I was saying... Im tone deaf rember? I have no need of 16 ears... nor do I have great fire of what did you call it? requiring ventillation no Im safe with 2 ears..
You just dont want to admit that I as usual am right... but cast your eyes on my siggy and you will find that I am always right

:p

AimusSage
12-27-2007, 03:54 PM
I looked at your signature, and found no indication that you are always right. :p What is it you refer too, Oh, is it the thing about your word being beyond contestation? You are quite right, it is so absurd that any contestation of what you say would only give it more validity of reason. So there we have it, a quite insane answer to the universe, but not the rest, so we are all still left guessing why you think 16 ears is not the pinnacle of evolution.

Because it is too much, although Id have no object to an extra pair of arms or too, think how fast the shelving would get done Id really be super librarian, then Id oust the great ledger and rule the world

One can always dream, but the shoulders of giants do not carry the weight of the universe by mere strength of many arms.

AimusSage
12-27-2007, 04:32 PM
But you all still agree that the rest is perfectly alright, so I am not too bothered, afterall, nobody is perfect, except someone with 16 ears, so what else could I expect of you? I comment you all for trying though :p :D
