NO Scot who wants his cultural pretensions to be taken seriously would ever admit to never having read Heart of Midlothian or Ivanhoe. In every Scottish household with a respectable bookcase you will find volumes of Sir Walter Scott - often many volumes since Sir Walter was nothing if not prolific.

However, if you pull out these worthy tomes (usually hardback editions) you are quite likely to find that, despite vague noises of approbation and appreciation from their owner, the pages have never actually been turned.
