The details of the publishing of Walter Scott's 'Ivanhoe' provides critics information about the creative and compositional impulses of Scott, his printer and his publisher. 'Ivanhoe' was intended as a break from Scott's usual narratives and so innovations were made to its physical appearance also. The physical difference was a reflection of the difference in content.
