Time has taken its toll on the magnificent monument to Sir Walter Scott, Scotland's greatest novelist.
Much of the fantastic carved detail on its spires, arches and facades is crumbling although the basic structure is still strong.
From today it will be closed for 15 months for much needed repairs at a cost of around pounds 2 million.
