QUEEN VICTORIA popularised it, Sir Walter Scott swore by it, and the Queen serves it at her garden parties: now scientists have found that spring water from the hills near Balmoral has medicinal powers.

The findings could help to explain the extraordinary longevity of the Royal Family since Queen Victoria, who died at the age of 82. They show that a daily draught of the water, from Pannanich Wells in Aberdeenshire, can help to relieve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in two out of three patients.
