AN infamous Scottish castle that once inspired one of the country's best-known writers is up for sale for 2.5 million, writes William Hardy.

Cloncaird Castle, in Ayrshire, set in 90 acres with salmon fishing, provided the setting for one of Sir Walter Scott's favourite plays, The Ayrshire Tragedy.

The lavish stone building in Kirkmichael, just south of Ayr, was owned in the 16th century by the dastardly nobleman Walter Mure.
