Sir Walter Scott steams into future powered by biodiesel

IT HAS carried millions of day-trippers enchanted by the landscape which inspired The Lady of the Lake poem, but faced the scrapyard because of dwindling funds.

However, the steamship Sir Walter Scott will soon return to the waters of Loch Katrine in the Trossachs after a GBP 500,000 overhaul to convert the 109-year-old vessel to greener fuel.

While the old coal engines had to be constantly stoked and left some passengers with soot-stained clothes, the new boilers will run on 40 per cent biodiesel and will emit much less smoke.

The steam engine will still be far less noisy than a motor one ...
