Housing plan on Scott's doorstep

THE historic home of Sir Walter Scott is under threat from plans to build homes near the picturesque Borders estate, conservationists said yesterday.

Developers have proposed 91 houses on the north bank of the River Tweed opposite Abbotsford, where the Scots author lived and worked. Conservationists, including the National Trust for Scotland (NTS), have accused Scottish Borders Council of fast-tracking the proposal in an effort to secure a commuter rail line with Edinburgh.
