A DRINKING chair of one of Sir Walter Scott's most memorable characters will be auctioned tomorrow in what is being described as the sale of a vital piece of Scottish history.

Baillie Nicol Jarvie, who was memorialised as Rob Roy's close friend in Scott's novel, was renowned as much for being a famous magistrate as an infamous drinker.

The corpulent Glaswegian was a regular at the Clachan Inn in Aberfoyle where, according to legend, he would perch in his favourite chair and down many ales.
