A 15TH CENTURY home which inspired one of Sir Walter Scott's greatest ballads is up for sale.

Smailholm House, the property Scott and his wife Charlotte made their home in Roxburghshire soon after their marriage, is on the market for offers over GBP 475,000.

The four-storey house, with five bedrooms, sits in the shadow of the ancient 60ft high Smailholm Tower, which is owned by Historic Scotland. Surrounded by five acres and boasting its own small forest, the B-listed Smailholm House is one of the best examples of a small 15th century Scottish estate. It lay in ruins for almost a century ...
