In the year 1737 Scotland was between two wars: the ill-fated rebellions
of 1715 and 1745 that brought that proud nation once and for all under British
rule. The spirit that had launched the '15 and soon would explode into the '45
was not at rest during peacetime. The traces of British oppression were
