1. What is the theme of Ivanhoe?
Answer: It is difficult to find a consistent theme in any of Scott's
novels, but there seem to be two interconnected themes at the core of Ivanhoe:
the evils of bigotry, and the compromise between heroic ideals and present
reality. The book begins simply enough with an undeclared civil war in
England between good Saxons and their sinister Norman conquerors. Our sympathy
is with Cedric and his countrymen because they have been the victims of
