Chapter Seventeen

After the harp had been tuned (with some difficulty), the knight struck
up a "ballad composed by a Saxon glee-man (minstrel), whom I knew in Holy
Land." What his voice lacked of natural quality, training had more than
supplied. His song, "The Crusader's Return," told of a knight returned from
the fighting, shorn of everything but his armor and his honor, asking that his
lady fair admit him to her castle since his gallantry in her name has brought
