Chapter Six
The Palmer was twice delayed on the way to his chamber. First Cedric's
cupbearer, Oswald, appeared and offered him wine if he would come and tell
some of the servants what else he knew of Ivanhoe's history. This invitation
the Palmer declined, saying he had vowed "never to speak in the kitchen on
matters which were prohibited in the hall." Disappointed and angered, Oswald
ordered the Palmer to be taken to humbler quarters. He was not far along the
