Sir Walter Scott was one of the most popular of all story writers. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. As a boy, he was often sick and spent much time studying old legends. Scott attended the University of Edinburgh and then became a lawyer. He composed many successful books of poems, including The Lay of the Last Minstrel (1805).

In 1814, Scott published Waverley, a romantic story about Scottish history. This was the start of a long series of historical books, called the ``Waverley'' novels. They include Rob Roy (1817), The Bride of Lammermoor (1819), Ivanhoe (1819), and ...
