Allan, Sir William
( b Edinburgh, 1782; d Edinburgh, 23 Feb. 1850). Scottish historical painter. From 1805 to 1814 he travelled extensively in Russia, and this gave him a taste for exotic subject matter involving Circassians, Cossacks, Tartars, and Turks (he collected arms and armour and other artefacts to use as props and sometimes wore Circassian costume himself). These pictures did not sell well, but in the 1820s he successfully took up Scottish subjects, including scenes from the novels of Sir Walter Scott, who was Allan's enthusiastic supporter.
