When Virgil Gordon steps out the front door of his store on South 43rd Street, motorists wave and passersby say hello.

After 23 years in business at the same location, his Gordon's Building Supply has become one of the few anchors in a blighted community called Southcrest.

This week, Gordon's community commitment, not to mention his business savvy, could finally pay off.

Plans for redeveloping part of Southcrest come before the San Diego City Council Tuesday, plans in which the hardware store owner plays a major role.
