The metropolitan Detroit community lost one of its most committed community
leaders with the passing of Virgil Howard Carr on May 30. Carr, the first
African-American president of United Way Community Services, served the
Detroit area with dedication and distinction. Under Carr's leadership at
the United Way, the organization became one of the most successful
fund-raising charities in the country. In the process, Carr earned the
admiration of many, including the business community.
