Book III

This book commences on an epic note. Virgil proclaims that he will sing a
theme so noble, so lofty, that his name will fly from mouth to mouth
throughout the earth. He will return to his native Mantua and set up a temple
to Octavius. He himself will be dressed like a victor in purple, and drive a
hundred four-horse chariots. Scenes of war, the people of the Ganges
submitting to the Romans, naval battles on the Nile with the ships' beaks
lined up in rows, will be carved on the gold and ivory doors of this temple.
