The Eclogues. Part 1
Introduction
The Eclogues (or as they are more properly called, the Bucolics, from the
Greek word meaning rustic) are probably the strangest of all Virgil's works to
modern readers. At first glance they seem to be about imaginary shepherds,
singing songs which don't make very much sense. They live in a land where
everything is lovely. Indeed, the poems are so unrealistic, and so unlike
anything in our modern world, that it is hard for us to get in the right mood
to appreciate their delicate and wistful beauty. Who cares about ideal
