At the end of the last book Aeneas sets sail from Caieta. Book VII starts
with the explanation for the harbor's name. Aeneas' nurse, Caieta, dies there,
and the Trojans do not sail till they have completed the funeral rites for
her. It is late afternoon when they finally get under way. Soon a full clear
moon rises, casting its sparkling path of light upon the water. As the fleet
sails northward it passes so close to the realm of the enchantress, Circe,
that the Trojans can hear the howls of the men she has changed into lions,
bears, wolves ...
