The flames of Dido's funeral pyre cause a glow to spread over the sky
which the fleeing Trojans cannot help but see. Everyone is filled with a sense
of doom. To increase their downcast spirits a storm comes up and the chief
helmsman, Palinurus, is not able to hold the course for Italy. The head winds
are too strong. He advises Aeneas, however, that they can bear off and make
for Sicily which is not too far distant. Aeneas gives his assent since the
change of plan will enable him to visit his old friend Acestes. In addition,
