CHICAGO _ In working to see Willa Cather's "My Antonia" in context, the dozen-plus students in Jonathan Gross' class at DePaul University have ranged far afield.

They've read the poetry of Virgil and William Wordsworth. They've examined the writings of Thomas Jefferson and studied Upton Sinclair's depiction of the oppressive world of immigrants in Chicago in the early 20th century.

It has all been geared to helping them _ as participants in Chicago's One Book, One Chicago reading initiative _ better understand Cather's story of Bohemian immigrant Antonia Shimerda and the ...
