When J.M. Synge's masterpiece The Playboy of the Western World first appeared at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1907, it caused a riot and a national furor. The initial Philadelphia performance in 1912 was likewise shut down by rioting, led by Irish nationalists who felt (as the Abbey audience had) the play was immoral and cast Irish life in a negative light.
