In the highland clearances of the 18th and early 19th centuries, thousands of Scots were driven from their homes and from Scotland to make room for the sheep that the lairds found more profitable than their crofters. Many of them came to Canada.

From Glengarry, Scotland, in 1804 the first McDonnell arrived in what is now Ontario's Glengarry county. Before long, there were more McDonnell's in Glengarry, Canada than in Glengarry, Scotland.
