Whole-group discussion is proposed as an alternative to lecturing in teaching literature. Using George Orwell's 'Animal Farm' as an example, it was shown that the approach is effective in generating student response and developing interpersonal skills such as active listening, questioning, explaining, paraphrasing and summarizing.
