Life Of George Orwell:

In 1943, the year of Europe's greatest self-destruction and for Western
civilization possibly the most hopeless year of this century, George Orwell
published an essay called "Looking Back on the Spanish War." In that essay,
there appears a poem dedicated to an anonymous soldier of the war, a war
(1936-39) in which Orwell himself served as a volunteer. Orwell had seen the
soldier who was the subject of his poem, and whose name he never did learn, in
1936 soon after he had come to Spain to be a soldier in the revolutionary
militia.
