IT'S 11 February 1949. George Orwell is enjoying a cup of tea when a letter arrives addressed to Eric Arthur Blair. "People who call me Eric knew me before I started writing," he says, peeling open the envelope. The letter, from childhood love Jacintha, prompts a stream of memories in this rich and beautifully crafted portrait of the author.
