GOVERNMENT officials, particularly in the education sector, deplore our students' lack of competence in English.

They want to restore English as the medium of instruction (it already is in many subjects) in order to remedy the unfortunate situation. English is "the wave of the future," and our future leaders are not riding on it.

A drastic reform of the education system is truly called for, but what should probably be done first is to correct the government's English. It's not only verbose but also misleading, if not downright incorrect.
