CHARLES Clarke insisted yesterday identity cards will act as a "bulwark against the Big Brother society".

But opponents were astonished by the Home Secretary's claim as they believe his plans will lead to a huge erosion of civil liberties.

As the Government faced its first backbench rebellion of the new Parliament, Mr Clarke told MPs: "I think the identity card gives a means of dealing with the information society issues.
