Festival defends Devon dialect against 'ory torys'

The dialect spoken in the Devon village of Appledore has a rich literary heritage. Rudyard Kipling went to school in the area and at the age of 16 playfully translated some lines from Homer into old Appledorian. Jerome K Jerome, author of Three Men in a Boat, grew up near by.

The tongue is so distinct that people brought up in the neighbouring port of Bideford, three miles away, can't understand it.

Now, though, Appledore's character is being transformed by outsiders buying up local properties, often for second homes. And the historic dialect is in danger of dying out. ...
