Actor Rodney Bewes and writer Jerome K Jerome have been unfairly labelled as one-hit wonders. Bewes for the 60s sitcom The Likely Lads and Jerome for his novel Three Men in a Boat.
In 1997, however, that book did bring both renewed acclaim presented by Bewes as a one-man show.
So, was the trick repeatable with Jerome's 1885 slice of autobiography, On the Stage and Off? Sadly, it wasn't.
You'd imagine a story about three years as a failed actor in the threadbare world of Victorian melodrama would have produced good material. But if it did, the adaptor must have left it on the cutting room ...
