Maxine Elliott's Theatre,
New York, on West 39th Street, between Broadway and 6th Avenue. This was built for Maxine Elliott , and opened in 1908. The first outstanding success, in the following April, was Jerome K. Jerome's The Passing of the Third-Floor Back . Synge's The Playboy of the Western World , played by the Abbey Theatre Company on their first American tour, caused a riot in 1911. In 1922 a dramatization of Maugham's short story Rain began a run of 648 performances, and another Maugham success was The Constant Wife (1926), with Ethel Barrymore .
