A study was conducted to analyze shifts in Marxist positions on author James Joyce. The premise that the major pitfall in Marxist readings of Joyce correlates with an inadequate concept of authorship was examined. Mikhail Bakhtin's work on answerability and a perspective on the intersection of social theory and culture were utilized to carry out the analysis. Results correlated the shifts with Marxism's difficulty with modernism and propensity for theoretical crisis.
