Life

James Joyce was born on February 2, 1882 in Rathgar, a suburb near
Dublin; and, in 1887, the family moved to Bray (the setting for the Christmas
Dinner scene in A Portrait), another suburb of Dublin. In September 1888,
Joyce was enrolled in Clongowes Wood College, operated by the Jesuits, located
about twenty miles west of Dublin. In June 1891, Joyce was withdrawn from
Clongowes after his father, John Joyce, lost his position as tax collector for
Dublin. In 1891, too, Joyce wrote "Et Tu, Healy!", commemorating the demise of
